This exhibition features a photographic collection which began in 2009 and is set to continue until 2012, the year that will mark Gilberto Gil's 70th Birthday. Canning House is delighted to display a selection of the works to date, taken both front and back-stage on tour, offering a preview of the book that is to come. André Camara, an experienced photojournalist, has dedicated himself to capturing evocative images of this great Brazilian artist, and will publish the collection as a book on the artist's birthday two years from now.
Having started as a photographer for the newspaper 'Jornal do Brasil' at 15 years old, at 17 he was the only photographer to brave a Rio slum during a drug war. After the newspaper splashed his photos over its pages, a national outcry forced the police to intervene. Twenty years later, they inspired the famous film City of God.

Based in London, André worked for Associated Press, and has been awarded for several prizes.

In collaboration with the Embassy of Brazil.

The photographic Exhibition 'From the Equator to Tierra del Fuego', curated by Isabel Quezada, narrates the story of a journey which began in early 2009 by award winning photographers Karla Gachet from Ecuador and Ivan Kashinsky from the USA. Driving through Ecuador, Peru, Chile, Bolivia and Argentina they capture through their lenses the derelict beauty of its landscape and the history and daily life of its people.

Among the images, there are photos of the Atacama Desert where their jeep broke down and of ancient Incan rituals in Peru, in which condor gods are stolen from the sky.

One of the highlights of their journey was a stay in Buenos Aires, where Karla and Ivan were able to spend time with a couple of young tango dancers. The photographs resulting from this experience earned Gachet a World Press Photo award in the category of arts and entertainment. The World Press Award is amongst the most prestigious photo journalism competitions in the world.

During the trip, Gachet and Kashinsky kept a blog at http://tothetip.wordpress.com, where both photographers could share the process in all its challenges and adventures.

"The expectation to get to the island of Tierra del Fuego started building up somewhere along the Argentinean Patagonia. The landscape for the past five days had been eternal washed-out-yellow plains on both sides of the road. Once in a while, a flock of hundreds of sheep would cheer up the scene. The land of the 'fueguinos' (the people who live on the island) is separated from the continent by the Strait of Magellan, where the two oceans that bathe the Americas meet up and make love". Karla Gachet

The exhibition is appearing for the first time in London and has been organized in collaboration with the Embassy of Ecuador, Embassy of Chile, Embassy of Bolivia and Embassy of Argentina.

Photos will be on sale. Proceeds will be donated to the Chilean Earthquake Appeal.

On October 3rd, Brazil goes to the polls to elect a new president. It is the first time in 21 years that Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the popular outgoing president, is not a candidate. With Brazil becoming an increasingly important presence in the international stage, all eyes are on the main two candidates for presidency: Dilma Rousseff and José Serra.

As Brazilians prepare to choose Lula's successor, Canning House in partnership with The Brazilian Chamber of Commerce in Great Britain will host a panel discussion examining Lula's time in office, as well as the challenges facing the future leader of one of the fastest growing economies in the world. The panel of experts will also analyse what the potential results would mean for Brazil economically, politically and socially.

Chile is today one of the world's major mining countries, and it expects to further enhance its position once massive investments materialize during the coming decade. Never before has the country seen such a large investment in one sector of the economy: mining projects for some US$50 billion are forecasted for this decade.

Although Chile is known as a leading producer of copper, it is also the world's main producer of lithium, iodine and nitrates, and it has an important share in the gold and silver markets.
The country's exceptional geological conditions are only part of this success story. A well-established commitment to an open economy, as well as policies that promote investment and new business endeavors are also part of the equation.

On October 12, Canning House in partnership with The Anglo-Chilean Society will host a conference by Chile's Minister of Mining, Mr. Laurence Golborne, who will discuss future opportunities and the general outlook for Chile's mining industry at the threshold of its largest-ever investment wave.

Laurence Golborne was born in Santiago in 1962 and studied at the Instituto Nacional. He later graduated as a Civil Engineer at the Universidad Catolica de Chile and he was awarded a prize as the best student of his promotion by the Colegio de Ingenieros de Chile. Mr Golborne has also completed postgraduate studies at both University of Northwestern and Stanford University in the USA.

His professional life has been developed in the private sector and he was until recently the CEO of Cencosud, one of the most successful private companies of South America. Mr Golborne led the expansion of this retail group not only in Chile but also into Argentina, Brasil, Peru and Colombia. He has been in the Board of several companies and advisor to The Havas Media Group's subsidiaries in Chile, Peru and Bolivia. Mr Golborne was also a Director of Audax Club Sportivo Italiano, ICARE and La Fundacion San Agustin de la Facultad de Ingenieria de la Universidad Catolica de Chile.

The appeal of Easter Island has been predominately evidenced though the work of archaeologists, anthropologists and scientists, whose reports have inspired the continuous flow of visiting tourists. Research has long focused on the way in which the famous moai were created, treated, and considered within the confines of Easter Island's landscape. Yet the moai have long held a popular appeal that has extended far into the worldwide cultural conscious, drawn to fantasies of a detached and distant civilisation.

This exhibition aims, for the first time, to bring together the fascinating diversity of cultural artefacts that have depicted Easter Island, in an attempt to help define the popular appeal of the moai in particular. Fiction films, adverts, cartoons, album covers, toys and board games, computer games, novels, and comic books will form a central part of this exhibition. Objects of material culture are not lacking, in which you will find moai replicas positioned as tissue box holders, glowing lamps, salt and pepper shakers, cushions, and fruit machine symbols, amongst others.

The exhibition is curated by Dr Ian Conrich, a specialist on film, visual and material culture of the Pacific islands. Co-curators are Dr Roy Smith and Martyn Harris.

In collaboration with the Embassy of Chile.
