A season celebrating Afro-Brazilian Culture at Canning House

2nd March 2010 1-3pm - Capoeira Workshop

Part-dance, part-combat, a performance of this centuries-old art-form by the London School of Capoeira will leave plenty of jaws dropping. But the students will not be given time to be overawed, as Mestre Marcos introduces the group to the movements, instruments and philosophy of this spectacular martial ballet.

9th March 1pm-4pm - Modern Brazilian Beats

Pick up a surdo (Brazilian bass-drum), some shakers or a guitar, and learn to play the sounds of Brazil. This workshop will put such iconic Brazilian rhythms as Samba and Bossa-Nova in the pupils. hands, as well as some lesser known beats such as Maracatu, Baiao and Afoxé. companying and leading this hands-on experience, Gui Tavares of TARU Arts Education Centre will explain how the influence of African culture in Brazil shook up European genres such as Polka and created the musical diversity for the which the country is now famous.

TBC - Exploring Candomblé

A chance to learn about one of the most emblematic facets of Afro-Brazilian culture. Students will explore the history, culture and folk stories of the Candombl´e religion, its Orixa deities and its practice of worship. Through the music, food offerings and costumes of this faith, the pupils will have an opportunity to get up close to one of the cultural and historical cornerstones of the Brazilian North-East. London's grey streets will seem like another world.
