Canning House is developing an education outreach programme to support and enhance learning in schools. We organise workshops on Hispanic and Brazilian cultures which include music, theatre, movement, capoeira, and universally relevant topics such as the rainforests, food production, the environment and development. We can tailor workshops to the needs of your school.

Schools Workshops
Portuguese Remix
22nd October: 10am-1pm
Experienced educationalist Virgilio Varela leads a dynamic workshop for music students and teachers. It aims to promote cultural understanding and aesthetic sensitivity in a morning when participants will move from listening to and discussing examples of traditional and modern Portuguese, Brazilian and African music (including Fado; Pop; Hip Hop; Bossa Nova; Samba; Kizomba and Coladeira) to trying out new instruments. The workshop includes a session of music-making in groups which will be followed by performance.
Mexican Art - Pre-Columbian to 20th Century
19th November: 10am-1pm
Mexican sculptor and graphic designer Janitzio Moreno will be taking students of art, history or citizenship - and their teachers - on a lively introductory journey into developments in Mexican art as it has evolved historically and its relationship with external social influences. In group work participants will identify and discuss examples of artistic styles characteristic of Pre-Columbian times; the Spanish Conquest; the Colonial Period; the Independence Movement; the Revolution and the Twentieth Century.
