Global demand for commodities and raw materials is exerting inflationary pressures in several countries across Latin America. After a historic low in 2006, consumer prices are edging up in most Latin American countries, particularly those of staple foods. Carlos Caicedo (of London-based strategic intelligence company Exclusive Analysis) will discuss these trends and the implications they have for trade policy, contract & delivery uncertainty, civil unrest, regime stability and the long-term implication of re-diversifying exports in Latin America.

Canning House is delighted to welcome back HMA Dr. Peter Collecott on Thursday 25th September. Dr. Collecott joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in 1977 and has been Ambassador in Brazil since August 2004. He is responsible for the promotion of British interests and the delivery of public services in Brazil, and for leadership of the three FCO Posts in Brazil (Brasilia, Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro), plus the network of Honorary Consuls. As a member of the Senior Leadership Forum, he is also responsible for promoting corporate leadership across the FCO network. Dr. Collecott has spoken at Canning House on several occasions since his appointment to Brazil and we are most grateful for his continuing insight on political and economic developments in Brazil and on Brazil's relationship with the wider region.

Minister Daniel Carlos Martinez has a degree in Mechanical and Industrial Engineering. As an industrial engineer at the Oil Refinery Plant, he oversaw projects in a variety of technical areas. He has significant professional experience as an industry consultant specialising in metallic structures, machinery and processes automation. He has acted as an adviser for Montevideo City Council and in 2005 he was appointed President of state oil company ANCAP. In March 2008 he was appointed Minister for Industry, Energy and Mining of Uruguay.

The event will be followed by Lunch sponsored by Rio Tinto.

Canning House and the Society for Latin American Studies (SLAS) are delighted to welcome Mr. James Painter speaking in his personal capacity for the SLAS Annual Lecture on Friday 7th November.

Mr. Painter is currently Latin America analyst at the BBC World Service. He joined the Service in 1992, and has worked in various capacities there including executive editor for the Americas, head of the Spanish American Service, head of the BBC Miami office, and editor in the newsroom. Prior to joining the BBC, he was a correspondent in Bolivia for four years working for various media in the UK and USA, including the BBC, Reuters, the Independent, and Christian Science Monitor. He has also reported from several other Latin American countries for a wide variety of publications.

Canning House invites you to a panel discussion with Dr. Peter Hakim, President, Inter-American Dialogue, Washington DC & Mr. Michael Reid, Americas Editor, The Economist. The event will be chaired by Lord Brennan QC, President of Canning House and will be followed by lunch.

The Inter-American Dialogue is the leading U.S. center for policy analysis, exchange, and communication on issues in Western Hemisphere affairs. The Dialogue brings together public and private leaders from across the Americas to address hemispheric problems and opportunities. Together they seek to build cooperation among Western Hemisphere nations and advance a regional agenda of democratic governance, social equity, and economic growth.

Peter Hakim is president of the Inter-American Dialogue, a Washington-based center for policy analysis and exchange on Western Hemisphere affairs. Hakim writes and speaks widely on hemispheric issues, is regularly interviewed on radio and television, and has testified more than a dozen times before Congress. His articles have appeared in Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, the New York Times, the Washington Post, Miami Herald, Los Angeles Times, and Financial Times, and in many Latin American newspapers and journals. He was a vice president of the Inter-American Foundation and worked for the Ford Foundation in both New York and Latin America. He has taught at MIT and Columbia. He has served on boards and advisory committees for the World Bank, Council on Competitiveness, Inter-American Development Bank, Foreign Affairs en Espanol, Partners for International Change, and Human Rights Watch. He is a member of the Council of Foreign Relations.

Mike Reid joined The Economist in 1990 as Mexico and Central America Correspondent and in 1994 changed to cover consumer industries. In 1996 he moved to Sao Paulo to be the Bureau Chief and in 1999 returned to London as Americas Editor. Prior to this, he was based in Lima, Peru working for The Economist, The Guardian and the BBC. His book 'Forgotten Continent: The Battle for Latin America's Soul' was published by Yale University Press in November 2007. Mike has been interviewed on the BBC World Service and BBC Radio 4 'PM', amongst others.

A talk in Spanish by Dr. Alberto Fernandez Former Chief of Cabinet of the Argentine Government (2003-2008).

Alberto Angel Fernandez (born April 2, 1959) was the Chief of Cabinet of Argentina during Nestor Kirchner presidency, and part of Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner's. Fernandez was born in Buenos Aires and studied in the Faculty of Law of the University of Buenos Aires, from where he graduated at the age of 24. He was a professor of criminal law there. In the field of politics, he worked in non-elective posts in the Deliberative Council of Buenos Aires City, in the Argentine Chamber of Deputies and in the national Ministry of Economy, during the 1990s. He was also involved in insurance and health services companies in the private field and in state banks and companies. During this time he became politically close to the governor of the province of Buenos Aires, Eduardo Duhalde. He was appointed Chief of Cabinet by President Nestor Kirchner upon taking office in 2003 and retained the same position under new President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner upon her election in 2007. He resigned to his office in July 2008.
